Canvasing Board Rule Change

BREAKING; August 9th, 2024 -Palm Beach, the Canvassing Board has implemented rule change 2.027 during a meeting where the public expressed strong opposition. Despite the pushback, the Board moved forward with the motion and adopted the rule change. This raises concerns about the timing of this decision, which coincides with Cord Byrd and the Department of State’s adjustment to the reporting requirements on blank ballots. Both changes appear to be linked in a way that may obscure the number of blank ballots cast. Blank ballots—those without any markings—will now be adjudicated as “Voter Intent” and recorded as an undervote. Election security advocates are critical of these changes, considering them suspiciously timed and potentially limiting transparency. They argue that the new rules give canvassing board members undue discretion in determining the intent behind a blank ballot.
